Members of the Atlanta Board of Education seem to putting their petty differences aside for the time being and are stepping up to the plate to do what needs to be done to assure the Atlanta Public Schools does not lose accreditation for its high schools, including Buckhead’s own North Atlanta High.
We applaud them for the direction they have taken so far to deal with the six specific requirements laid out by the Southeast Association of Colleges and Schools and AdvancED that must be met by Sept. 30 in order not to risk losing accreditation.
But, we and all of Atlanta—especially the parents of students in the Atlanta Public Schools system—will be watching every step as best we can. Unfortunately, the APS Board had not been known for its openness and transparency in operations in the past. Hopefully that will change, and soon.
Maybe the school board needs to hire a good public relations specialist—someone who tells what actually is going on and doesn’t just send out sweet releases that are designed to pat the superintendant on the back.
