More than a hundred Chick-fil-A fans set up camp in a Dunwoody shopping center parking lot on May 1 in hopes of winning free meal coupons when the new restaurant officially opened for business May 2.

Kay McIntosh of Dunwoody planned to tent overnight with her aunt, Rose Ventura of Greenville, S.C. They said they were on hand at 5:30 a.m. May 1 to claim a place in line and hoped to be among the restaurant’s first 100 customers, who each would receive coupons for 52 free meals.

Their tent was among about 40 in the parking lot next to the restaurant on the evening of May 1. Chick-fil-A provided food, music from a dj and planned to provide security overnight, said company spokeswoman Cindy Chapman.

Ventura said she had been to four previous Chick-fil-A openings to collect the free-meal coupons. “I like the sandwiches,” she said.

Chapman said the restaurant chain started distributing coupons at new standalone restaurant openings about 10 years ago.
