It’s the first day back for students in Fulton and DeKalb County Schools. Atlanta Public Schools resumed classes last week.
DeKalb’s enrollment this year is projected to be 99,676 students, according to Interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond. Fulton County Schools Superintendent Robert Avossa told the media at a press conference on Friday that enrollment this year will be 95,000, an increase of 1,000 students.
Robert Shaw will begin his first year as principal of Riverwood International Charter School, located in Sandy Springs and part of the Fulton County Schools system.
For one Sandy Springs mom, the first day of school was bittersweet.
Mandy Kelley said this will be the last year all four of her children will be in the same school, Heards Ferry Elementary.
“I have never cried on the first day of school,” she wrote in an email to Reporter Newspapers, “But it finally hit me this year!”
Kelley snapped this photo of Laura, third grade, Pete, fourth grade, Baxter, kindergarten, and Scott, fifth grade.
