Businessman David Perdue defeated longtime Rep. Jack Kingston in yesterday’s Republican runoff for Georgia’s U.S. Senate nomination, setting up a general election matchup against Democrat Michelle Nunn in November. Perdue lead with more than 6,000 votes.
As we posted this, no winner had been declared in the runoff between Republicans Michael Buck and Richard Woods for State School Superintendent. Neither reached the required 50 percent plus one to win. Whoever the Republican nominee turns out to be, he will face Democrat Valarie Wilson, who beat Alisha Morgan.
Beth Beskin won the Republican nomination to a Buckhead-based seat in the Georgia House of Representatives. Beskin had outpolled John McCloskey — who had announced he would not campaign for the seat during the runoff campaign and who had endorsed Beskin — by more than five to one.
Jeff Mann beat fellow Democrat Vernon Jones to win the DeKalb County Sheriff’s seat.
