BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Quarterback Diego Pavia accounted for five touchdowns to lead Vanderbilt to a 35-27 victory over Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl on Friday, clinching the Commodores’ first winning season since 2013.
Pavia threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as Vanderbilt (7-6) earned its first bowl victory in 11 years.
The Commodores built a 35-13 lead in the fourth quarter before Georgia Tech (7-6) mounted a late comeback. Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King threw touchdown passes of 9 and 2 yards in the final five minutes, but Georgia Tech failed to recover either of its onside kick attempts.
King finished 25-of-33 passing for 204 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Running back Jamal Haynes led Georgia Tech with 136 yards rushing on 17 carries.
