When We’re Free

July 2 — Some stories begin with a suitcase. Others with a paintbrush. This week, we’re looking at what happens when people are given the room to make something entirely their own.

At the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, “Brilliant Exiles” opens July 19 with a look at American women in Paris between 1900 and 1939. From Josephine Baker to Romaine Brooks, these artists didn’t just escape. They expanded, using portraiture and performance to rewrite the rules.

Closer to home, there’s still time to help the next generation tap into that same spirit. Our roundup of Metro Atlanta art camps and classes spotlights seven programs still open for registration this summer. From mural-making to Saturday morning sculpture, kids are building more than skills – they’re building space to explore.
