Definitely too much info
Wednesday, May 13 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. One of the truly special things about getting older, besides the inability to get out of bed without groaning, is getting a preventative colonoscopy, which I did for the second or third time on Monday (this is not an occasion I mark with a big star in my paper calendar).
Some things about a colonoscopy don’t really change (hellish prep), and some have, including a very descriptive post-op report that includes “in-and-out” times, a photographic tour through the colon, and a compliment on the quality of one’s preparation efforts. Just enough information to gross you out while simultaneously being kind of fascinating.
Enough of that. Let’s get to some newsy items before I share some candid photos of my hepatic flexure below (just kidding).
🛝 Dunwoody Parks and Recreation is kicking off the summer season with Kids to Parks Day on Sat., May 16, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on the front field at Brook Run Park.
🇺🇸 The City of Dunwoody invites the community to reflect, honor, and give thanks during its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Mon., May 25, at the Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial (4770 N. Peachtree Road).
🍹The next Social Friday on The Green will be May 15 from 6-8 p.m. at High Street. Bring the family to unwind with music and games on The Green, all while savoring drinks and bites from onsite restaurants.
Onward,
Cathy

Up in the air until August
🌬️The Dunwoody City Council on May 11, after a lengthy discussion about an ordinance to regulate vape shops within the city, tabled the matter and extended a moratorium on new permits until August 10.
The measure would define the areas where vape shops would be permitted and set parameters for what would constitute a vape shop – either 25% or more of its total products sold being vape-related, or 25% of its interior space used for vape-related sales.
Paul Leonhardt, the city’s deputy community development director, provided information in response to several council questions raised at the April 27 meeting.
🚬 Here are more details on the discussion.

A rare eagle, indeed
🦅 It’s not often that one achieves a statistical impossibility – but Dunwoody’s Jay “Houston” Hickey did just that, becoming a fourth-generation Eagle Scout.
Houston, who grew up in Dunwoody through Cub Pack 477 and Scout Troop 477 operating out of Kingswood Church, followed in the footsteps of his father, Jay, his grandfather, Jay Lindy, and great-grandfather, Rolet Vernon.
He was honored on May 3 at the Dunwoody Nature Center, which featured Patriot, an American Bald Eagle, that made the journey from the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis, MO.
The odds of achieving an Eagle over four generations are approximately 0.000072% (72 in a million or 72/1,000,000) using all-time American figures, his father said.

Touch a truck, tour the new building
🚜 The public is invited to celebrate the completion of the new Brook Run Maintenance Facility on May 21 with an opportunity to explore construction equipment.
According to a release from the city, “kids can explore our construction equipment from 4-6 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., we’ll gather to cut the ribbon on the new facility.”
NOTE: An activity the younger ones get to do while adults stand around and pretend they aren’t jealous.

PICTURE THIS: Hummus Village
🫒 I stumbled on this little gem next to Lucky Goat Coffee on Dunwoody Park. I needed a last-minute appetizer, and they were more than obliging, even though they weren’t quite open for the day.
The pita was warm and fresh, the hummus smooth with a nice splash of olive oil, and it was all accompanied by a pretty assortment of vegetables. They also have a menu featuring healthy lunch options.
Owner Haim Jabits (pictured above) told me he came out of retirement to launch this venture. They are open every day from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. except Saturday. Let’s support him!
