Tree clearing resumes on SR 400 for next phase of express lane project
🌳 The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that tree clearing will resume on six sections of State Route 400 in early August, as the multi-year, billion-dollar widening project enters a new construction phase.
In its July newsletter, GDOT also said SR 400’s southbound Exit 5, which provides access to the North Springs MARTA station, Abernathy Road, and Hammond Drive, will close “later this summer.”
While the exact timing of the widening project’s first major lane closure and detour is not known, the update tells affected commuters and residents to “be on the lookout for additional information in the coming weeks.”

Housing affordability and park access are top priorities for Sandy Springs residents
🏞️ The Sandy Springs Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee is modifying community goals and identifying new priorities for the city’s 2027 comprehensive plan to match resident feedback. Topics discussed include continued investment in paths and walkability, protection of neighborhood character, housing affordability, and a potential parks bond.
Sukirti Ghosh, an urban designer and principal with Rhodeside & Harwell who is leading the city’s consultant team, said hundreds of comments from citizens have been documented at community events in recent months.
“Housing affordability is coming out as one of the top concerns and a desire to provide affordable housing options for young families, empty nesters, seniors, and those looking to downsize,” Ghosh said. “Opinions on multifamily are very mixed … some would like to see more apartments and others feel like there are too many already.”

City Council approves Roswell Road safety study
🚴🏼♂️ The Sandy Springs City Council has approved a contract with Gresham Smith to engineer and design a Roswell Road (State Route 9) safety study.
The specific study area is just north of Interstate 285, from Cliftwood Drive to Hammond Drive on both sides of the state route. Cliftwood Drive at Roswell Road ranks as the second-highest high-injury intersection, and the stretch of state highway is one of the most dangerous, according to a city memo.
Public Works Director Marty Martin said the study will inform safety and traffic flow enhancements, allowing the city to request federal funds from the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Georgia Department of Transportation for specific, analyzed projects.

🚓 The City Council also approved routine contracts for 12 new 2026 Ford Explorer SUVs for the police department. The $597,900 contract with Cobb County-based Wade Ford is within the city’s 2027 budget and fleet fund.
Sandy Springs Police Capt. James McNabb said the department’s fleet manager has notified him that the vehicles are available on the lot.
“The price is set until the end of the month,” McNabb said. “Expedited approval would be appreciated, so we could maintain the quote that we currently have. And upon approval, we will move forward with the application procurement policies and procedures set forth by the city.”
