The SAP is back

Friday, Aug. 28 — It’s been a heavy week. With Dolly Parton and Tim Curry passing away back-to-back, many people (myself included) are feeling the loss of two inimitable icons. Both were charming, talented, funny, and dedicated to spreading joy, and their legacies will live on.

On a more Tucker-specific note, the Student Assignment Project feedback process starts back up next week. Tucker is one of the six clusters that this push for feedback will focus on. Read below for the updates DCSD shared at this week’s Tucker City Council meeting.

👾 Infinite Horizons Arcade hosts its first-ever Friday Night Fight tonight. Anyone can enter this single-elimination fighting game tournament. Tonight’s game is Street Fighter 2. Registration begins at 7 p.m. and the fight begins at 8 p.m. sharp.

♿ The deadline to complete the survey providing feedback to inform Tucker’s ADA strategy plan is Tues., Aug. 31.

🎵 Londzell Performing Arts Center hosts a So So Def Bass All-Stars 30th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday at 8 p.m. The event brings together artists, DJs, and producers to celebrate the bass music movement.

DCSD shares SAP updates

🏫 Leaders from the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) provided updates about the district’s achievements, goals, and the newly revitalized Student Assignment Project (SAP) during a Tucker City Council work session on Aug. 24.

Dr. Triscilla Weaver and Dr. Cherisse Campbell presented updates to the SAP engagement process, which restarts on Sept. 1. This fall, DCSD will focus on overcrowded schools in the Lakeside, Cross Keys, Chamblee, Tucker, Dunwoody, and Druid Hills clusters. Parents in these clusters are invited to attend three public comment sessions throughout September and October.

🔗 For more than a decade, Tucker has been home to an organization supporting people with disabilities across Georgia.

DisABILITY LINK is a non-residential center for independent living, working to equip people living with disabilities with the skills and support they need to thrive. The Tucker-based organization offers five core services – peer support, independent living skills training, advocacy training, information and referral, and transition services – all centered around autonomy and independence.

“When it comes to people with disabilities, we’re the experts in our own lives. Ask us, we’ll be glad to share,” Dr. Kim Gibson, the Executive Director of DisABILITY LINK, told Rough Draft. “People with disabilities are not asking for special needs; they’re asking for equal opportunities, equal needs that everybody else enjoys.”
