Wednesday, Sept. 2 — The first of this week’s Sketchbook stories uncovers a past that turns out to be surprisingly contemporary. The other looks at how a new Atlanta arts leader is building a future based on respecting what came before.
At the Georgia Museum of Art the new exhibit “Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone” isn’t just a retrospective of a 19th-century sculptor. New scholarship featured in the show confirms what was long assumed about Lewis’s life, leaving visitors with a strikingly modern image of her as a forward-thinking businesswoman.
Meanwhile, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is looking forward while standing on more than 50 years of history. New executive director Jason Martin says his first job is protecting what his predecessor Andrew Keenan and others built before he changes anything, even as the center races to finish The Warren, its next chapter.

A legacy in stone

🧂 MODA’s newest exhibition,SALT: A Design Story, argues that it’s one of history’s most powerful forces. Long before humans built cities, salt determined where they would rise, which trade routes would flourish, and the shape of rituals marking birth, marriage, and death.
The exhibition moves from ancient brine wells to the craft salt movement to contemporary material experiments, showing how a simple mineral quietly shaped the design of the world around us.

Atlanta artist @Lonnieholleysuniverse spent his residency at the @MuseumofGlass turning drawings into brightly colored vessels in collaboration with the museum’s Hot Shop team, who work alongside visiting artists in live, daily demonstrations.
