Professional Shakespeare performances at the Avondale Estates Town Green are rebranding. The fall 2026 season will go on under a new name, “Shakespeare at Sunset Series,” and will partner with a new theatre group, Georgia Classic Theater.
The first two seasons were presented in collaboration with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company, laying the foundation for live theater at the Town Green. Upcoming shows with the Georgia Classic Theater will feature several artists whose careers include performances with the former Georgia Shakespeare which operated from 1985 until 2014.
The new name comes with a timing change as well. Shows will now begin at sunset. According to a release from DeKalb County Commissioner Edward Terry, performances were rescheduled to create a more comfortable outdoor experience and a more “captivating” theatrical atmosphere.
“It’s especially fitting to host Shakespeare in our community, whose founders found inspiration in Stratford-upon-Avon,” said Avondale Estates City Manager Patrick Bryant in the release. “Shakespeare at Sunset is a wonderful nod to that history, while also creating a fun, accessible experience for families and residents to enjoy together.”
The season opener is “The Taming of the Shrew” on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Town Green. Programming is free and open to the public.
