A dreary Memorial Day weekend

Friday, May 22 — It’s Katie sans Cathy here! I’ve officially taken over the Tucker newsletter, and I’m so excited to keep learning about the city and sharing fun and important stories with y’all.

The big story this week is the runoff for the DeKalb County School Board District 4 election, but first, some quick news:

🛍️ The Purple Moose Consignments and Antiques in downtown Tucker will be closing at the end of the month. The entire store is 50% off until the end of May.

🚽 Good news: the City of Tucker posted to Facebook that the bathrooms at Tucker Town Green should now be operating properly. Phew!

📚 Tucker schools Henderson Mill Elementary, Midvale Elementary, and DeKalb Early College Academy were among the 22 DeKalb schools recognized on Georgia’s “Beating the Odds” list. This list recognizes schools outperforming expectations compared to schools with similar student populations across the state.

🇺🇸 It’s Memorial Day weekend, and we at Rough Draft are thinking of the service people whose lives have been lost and their families. Unfortunately, the weather looks like it will be pretty crappy, but if you’re willing to brave the rain, American Legion Post 207 is hosting a barbecue on Saturday.

🌭 Enjoy your weekend,
Katie

DeKalb school board election goes to a runoff

🗳️ For the DeKalb County Board of Education candidates running to represent Tucker in District 4, last night’s election resulted in a runoff. While no candidates received the necessary 50% of the vote to win, Tracy Brisson and Sonja Szubski garnered the most votes, earning a spot in June’s runoff election.

Brisson led Tuesday’s election with 37.31% of the vote, compared to Szubski’s 21.22%.

A total of 21,821 people of the more than 56,000 registered voters in District 4 voted in the primary election – including 11,208 on Election Day. According to information shared with Brisson, the number of people who voted early in District 4 increased by 51% compared to 2022, and the youth vote (ages 18 to 24) increased by 497%.

⛺ The last day of school in DeKalb County is May 28, and several organizations throughout Tucker are hosting unique day camps throughout June and July to help parents with childcare and to create special memories for kids.

Registration is still open for summer camps hosted by the Tucker Parks and Recreation Department, Mama Debbie’s Art Emporium, and the Main Street School of Art.
