Alex Somer has suspended his campaign for mayor and will instead enter the Sandy Springs City Council District Four race.

Somer also endorsed Dontaye Carter for mayor in a joint announcement on May 19.

Somer announced his mayoral campaign during a city council meeting on March 4. According to the announcement, Somer said he spent months speaking with residents, stakeholders, and city leaders before making this decision.

Somer leaves a still-crowded mayoral race, with four candidates in the running: Andy Bauman, Carter, Rusty Paul, and Jody Reichel.

“After thoughtful reflection and honest conversations with people I trust, including Dontaye, I’ve come to see that the most impactful path forward — for both our community and myself — is not a contest between visions, but a collaboration toward shared purpose,” Somer said in his announcement.

The announcement said Somer decided to refocus his campaign in a desire to create meaningful change where it matters most—at the intersection of community needs and government action.

Carter said he had a powerful discussion with Somer about making an impact on the city. Both men are passionate about education and ensuring the city is welcoming to all, with transparent, honest, and ethical leadership, Carter said.

Somer said that through the council seat, he can focus on delivering tangible results for families, small businesses, and schools in the district, according to the announcement.
