As the July 4 holiday nears, the city of Brookhaven is reminding residents about state and local restrictions on fireworks.

Fireworks can be legally used in Brookhaven any day from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 3 and Friday, July 4. To report illegal fireworks, Brookhaven Police Department recommends calling 911. Prior to those hours, discharging fireworks is legal and should not be reported, BPD said.

Fireworks cannot be used in parks or historic districts, or within 100 yards of any gas station, electric plant, water or wastewater treatment plant, refinery, electric substation, jail or prison, helipad, hospital, nursing home or healthcare facility.

It is illegal to discharge fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Discharging a firearm within the city limits, even in a celebratory manner, is a crime.

The Brookhaven Police Department said a number of calls regarding fireworks could be avoided “if everyone follows the ordinances and common-sense rules created to make the holiday safe for all.”

“It’s a given that residential fireworks are still going to take place and neighborhood displays may offer the best option for local viewing,” according to a press release. “Having said that, it’s always a good practice to consider your neighbors and pets when using fireworks and be courteous and respectful of others while enjoying the holiday fun.”

The National Safety Council emphasized that fireworks should not be handled by young children, and used only under close adult supervision.

Holiday events in metro Atlanta include the Celebration of Independence fireworks show on Tucker’s Main Street on July 3 at 6 p.m., and the Red, White and Dunwoody, a 2.7 mile parade of local celebrities and elected officials on July 4 at 9 a.m., and Stars and Stripes fireworks in Sandy Springs on July 4 at 6 p.m.
