A man died Saturday morning after falling onto the tracks at MARTA’s Civic Center Station and being struck by a northbound train, according to MARTA Police.

The incident happened around 10:40 a.m. on June 13. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed the man arriving at the station by train at approximately 10:32 a.m. About three minutes later, he sat on a granite strip along the platform edge before stepping down into the northbound trackway. Moments later, he tried to climb back up onto the platform but could not.

Train could not stop in time

According to a statement from MARTA, a train operator notified Police Communications at approximately 10:43 a.m. that a person had been struck. MARTA Police said the operator was unable to stop the train before it hit the man at 10:40 a.m.

Firefighters from Atlanta Fire Station 11 and Grady EMS Unit 754 responded along with several MARTA Police units. Crews had to de-energize the tracks before they could safely reach the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No foul play suspected

MARTA Police Criminal Investigations Unit detectives said there is no indication of foul play. Evidence shows the man entered the trackway area alone.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Station closed for hours, bus bridge established

Civic Center Station was shut down for several hours following the incident. To keep passengers moving, MARTA established a bus bridge between Civic Center and the Peachtree Center and North Avenue stations.
