Wednesday, June 24 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. The city’s popular July 4 parade is only nine days away, so it’s time to start thinking about placing your chair along Mt. Vernon Road so you have an unobstructed view.
Here are some newsy items to consider:
📈 On July 1, the city will hold its final public hearing on its millage rate for residential properties, so if you like that kind of stuff, it starts at 6 p.m. Also, if you like that kind of stuff, consider taking up a hobby.
🧑🍳 A great way to keep up with what’s going on in the city, besides this quality newsletter, is the quarterly Dunwoody Digest. The latest edition highlights several new restaurants that have opened in the city. I’m working my way through the list.
🐕 Last weekend, I attended a Puppy Love Mahjong event in Brookhaven that raised money for LifeLine Animal Project. The dogs were adorable, and playing mahjong with new people was fun, even though fellow reporter Logan C. Ritchie destroyed everyone in the first game. We should do this fundraiser in Dunwoody.
🥒 At both the Saturday DHA Farmers Market and the Sunday market in the Shops of Dunwoody, there is a vendor named Eat Right Atlanta who sells six huge portions of fresh vegetables for $20. Best deal ever.

Blue Star ceremony set for July 2
✰ The Dunwoody Garden Club and Parks is launching the city’s celebration of the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary with a Blue Star Memorial ceremony on July 2 at Brook Run Park.
Blue Star Memorial markers are nationwide tributes honoring the U.S. Armed Forces, initiated by garden clubs after World War II. The large metal signs can be found in parks, national cemeteries, and soon, the new Brook Run Park Veterans Memorial.
The July 2 dedication ceremony for Brook Run Park’s Blue Star Memorial begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial across from the Skate Park at 4770 North Peachtree Road.

I came, I saw, I FIFA-ed
⚽️ As you know, I cover Brookhaven, Dunwoody, and edit the Rough Draft In Print monthly publications. Consequently, I have not had many opportunities to cover World Cup-related events.
On June 17, I, along with my Rough Draft colleagues, attended an Atlanta Press Club and Metro Atlanta Chamber media reception at the former CNN Center, now called the CTR. I was determined to cram as many FIFA-related encounters into that night. It was an unexpected, joyful experience.

🧩 Create Dunwoody has launched the America 250 Community Puzzle Project, a community-wide initiative designed to bring people together around tables at local businesses and gathering spaces throughout Dunwoody.
Hosted at restaurants, shops, office waiting rooms, and other community spaces, the project encourages community members, families, friends, and visitors to slow down, connect, and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.
The project places custom 500-piece puzzles at participating locations, inviting people to stop by and add a few pieces whenever the businesses are open. The first puzzle features a map of the Greater Dunwoody Village area and includes the logos of participating businesses.

☎️ The Dunwoody Police Department has received reports of scammers calling residents pretending to be our police officers. Some callers have even identified themselves as Police Chief Mike Carlson.
First of all, that dude has more important things to do, like attend Perimeter Chamber Events, ask the city council for some extra equipment for the department, or just about anything else. Also, he’s such a nice guy. If someone posing as Chief Carlson tried to threaten me, I’d laugh for a while, then hang up.
According to city officials, these callers may claim you have a warrant out for your arrest, owe the city money, have missed jury duty, or must make an immediate payment to avoid arrest. Here’s where your spidey senses should kick in: The authorities will accept a gift card as payment. After attending the 13-week Citizens’ Police Academy, my understanding is that if police have a warrant for you, they will come to you, usually uninvited.
