Outrage over surge of data centers in Georgia inspires wave of bipartisan bills
🔌 A surge in data center development has turned Georgia into a national hotspot while raising fresh concerns about the state’s energy landscape and natural resources.
After a massive request from Georgia Power to expand its energy capacity by about 10,000 megawatts due to unprecedented growth driven largely by a rise in data centers and a recent focus on energy affordability – particularly after Democratic successes campaigning on the issue in 2025 – lawmakers seem likely to consider legislation that could help regulate the power-hungry, massive facilities.

Scalise family’s nonprofit to celebrate more than a decade of helping breast cancer survivors
🚶♀️ Since their mom’s breast cancer diagnosis in July 2015, the Scalise daughters have raised more than $113,000 through their charity, Strides for Survivors. The family’s nonprofit is celebrating its 10th anniversary Jan. 31 with a walk around Chastain Park.
Stephanie Scalise, deemed cancer-free in April 2016, said she credits her recovery and health to the rehabilitation center, citing its community feel and open discussion of her treatment options.
All proceeds the family nonprofit generates go directly to TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, a Sandy Springs-based nonprofit addressing the gap in services for both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery.

Actor’s Express to open 38th season with ‘Girl From the North Country’
🎭 Performing arts theater Actor’s Express (AE) announced that it will open its 38th season on Jan. 31 with “Girl From the North Country,” an acclaimed musical that features songs written by the legendary Bob Dylan.
Taking place at the King Plow Arts Center, the production tells the story of a group of tired travelers in 1930s Minnesota who converge at a boarding house during the Great Depression.
“The first thing about the musical that struck me was how exquisite the arrangements were of these great Bob Dylan songs. The music came to life in a way that I couldn’t have imagined previously,” said Actor’s Express Artistic Director Freddie Ashley, director of the upcoming Atlanta show. “Also, in these tough years we’ve been living through, I think it’s really important to uplift stories about people from different backgrounds coming together in times of hardship to create family and community.”

‘Atlanta in a Flash’: Stories of Atlanta by Lance Russell
VIA SAPORTAREPORT
📷 Georgia State’s extensive digital collections library contains visual gems of Atlanta life through the years. Some of those are thanks to the efforts of a man by the name of Tracy O’Neal.
For decades, O’Neal captured the rich tapestry of Atlanta: trade shows, promotional events, new products, Shriners, convicts, and exotic dancers. They were all seen through the photographer’s lens and preserved by Georgia State for future generations to enjoy.
⚙️ Take a look at some of Tracy O’Neal’s work in this installment of Stories of Atlanta.
